History

In a commanding position offering fine views of the Solway and of the surrounding countryside. This was the site of a Roman turret (70A) on Hadrian’s Wall. Long after the Romans departed the site was again used for defensive purposes; the mound on which the 12th century church stands was a Norman motte (a small castle) belonging to the Le Brun family. The village green was the site of the castle’s bailey, or courtyard. The simplicity of the light interior of this small church, with its Norman doorway and 16th century roof, offers the visitor a peaceful place to absorb its history, described on three panels covering prehistoric times to the present day.
