The Celebration of the Solway Art Exhibition
The Celebration of the Solway Art Exhibition, run by, and in support of, St. Michael’s Church, Burgh-by-Sands, takes place every five years in Burgh-by-Sands Parish Hall over the three days of the Bank Holiday at the end of August.
This is an extremely popular event, drawing visitors from a very wide area to see the paintings being exhibited – all of which have as their sole subject matter the Solway area – its villages and towns, countryside and the coastline on both sides of the Solway Estuary. It provides probably the best opportunity to see individual artistic interpretations of the Solway by so many different artists, in one exhibition. In addition to the exhibition of paintings there are a number of high quality trade stands with an interesting selection of items on sale and cream teas are available .In 2016 approaching six hundred people attended the event over the three days; almost sixty artists exhibited and over forty paintings were sold. The splendid sum of £4,825 was raised towards restoration work on Burgh’s church tower.
